About the Artist
Emma van den Akker is a Dutch-American painter who grew up frequently moving across America until settling in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with her mother at the age of nine. Van den Akker majored in psychology at Temple University of Philadelphia, but found the technical format of her studies to be unfulfilling and distracting. Van den Akker is the granddaughter of a professional painter, and was always drawn to art as a casual hobby, but never considered pursuing it further until after graduating from college in 2018. Van den Akker found her artistic voice in the visual studies of the world around her and channels that energy into the portraits and seascapes she paints. She has been featured in artistic magazines and has shown her work in Philadelphia as well as Austin, Texas where she currently resides.
